Canada is set to introduce a new approach to its Express Entry system, with the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) planning category-based draws targeting candidates in six distinct fields. These draws, akin to existing program-specific ones, are expected to commence in the coming summer, inviting skilled workers with expertise in high-demand sectors. The initiative aims to align with Canada’s commitment to welcoming professionals in key industries across the nation.
The six new groups for Express Entry category draws include candidates with:
Eligible candidates must have at least six months of consecutive work experience in one of these industries over the last three years, either in Canada or abroad. For those aspiring to qualify under the French language proficiency category, a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities on the Niveaux de Compétence Linguistique Canadiens is required.
The selection of these six categories followed a comprehensive consultation process, involving provinces, territories, industry members, unions, employers, worker advocacy groups, settlement provider organizations, and immigration researchers. As part of this new approach, IRCC will annually report to Parliament on the chosen categories, the rationale behind their selection, instructions to establish a category, and the number of invitations issued for each.
Express Entry is Canada’s primary federal immigration method that manages applications from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
Traditionally, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score has been the primary criterion for Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. However, with the introduction of these category-based draws, priority will be given to candidates in specific industries, while general and program-specific draws will continue alongside.
